I heard an amazing story today… a story that is a great picture of how I have come to believe that God’s church (those of us who claim to love and follow Him) is supposed to act.
Sam Lesky, the campus pastor of Seacoast Church‘s North Charleston campus, over-sees several groups of people from the church as they take monthly trips into an area of town that is home to many people less fortunate than many of us. They take food, furniture, and clothing to people in need as they get to know them. Sam has asked that other people who also want to help show up with trash bags in hand and pick up trash in the neighborhoods. One recent Saturday, the Seacoast “Adopt-a-Block” people were out serving in the area and a few of them noticed a group from another religious organization that was also working in the neighborhood… going door to door, handing out literature.
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (Philippians 2:4-7 ESV)
