On this beautiful spring morning, I’ve decided to take the next few weeks and wade through the book of Hebrews… by ‘wade” I mean that I will go at no particular pace. This could be a while… I’m stopped almost immediately; Chapter 1, verse 3:
The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. Hebrews 1:3 (NLT)
First off, I invite you to read and then re-read this passage… there is a lot there to soak in!
The part where I get stuck is, “When he had cleansed us from our sins…” That is past tense… had cleansed… it’s already done! I know that, for me, I’m often feeling like I need Jesus to show up at the house and clean me up…again…and again… I need this incredibly clear and simple reminder that it has already been done; I just need to walk like I believe it.
You are not sitting in a line somewhere, waiting for your turn to have the Savior cleanse you from your sins… that part has been handled. Done. Past tense.
